Construction update: Now and what will it look like in September

Work is progressing rapidly at Barringer Road, Fisher, and CVA. Check out the photos below for how things looked on July 17. We’ve also included a recap of what students and staff can expect to find when school resumes in September.

Note: We’ve focused on the visible building changes. Buildings are also getting “unseen” improvements to heating, cooling, plumbing, and technology.

Barringer Road Elementary

Work is focused on three areas—the main entrance, the old locker rooms by the gymnasium, and a new edition out back.

Main entrance

gutted room with exposed ceiling and concrete floor.

The main entrance is getting a big makeover. The offices have been gutted and construction of a new secure entrance through the office is underway.

Old locker rooms

gutted room with exposed ceiling and concrete floor.

The old locker rooms are gone! They will soon be converted into OT/PT and BOCES classrooms.

Addition

outdoor wooden concrete forms

Excavation is complete and footings are poured for the first section. Contractors are building forms for the concrete walls. Work on the second section begins once foundation work is complete on the first section.

What you’ll find in September

For visitors: The “buzzer” at the front door will be gone. Instead, visitors will enter the building to find a new set of security doors 20 feet inside the main entrance (just past the cafeteria entrance). A new door on the left will lead visitors directly into the main office where they will sign in.

For students: The security doors will be unlocked for student arrival and dismissal, but will be locked at other times of day. That means students will access the cafeteria only through the doors on the left. OT/PT and other BOCES programs will be housed next to the gymnasium. The doors toward the old soccer fields will be closed off while contractors continue building the six new classrooms at the end of the third grade wing.

Harry M. Fisher Elementary

Work is focused on the roof, a new boiler (sorry no photos), the media center, the main office and the new addition in the back.

Roof

Roof work is basically complete. Things are tight and dry.

Media center

Interior construction with exposed concrete floor, wall studs, ceiling and wiring

The media center has been gutted. Contractors have begun construction of the new main office and the new secure building entrance.

Main office

The main office is also gutted. It will be the new health center, faculty room, and psychologist and social worker offices.

Addition

outdoor site graded for construction

Site work is complete and foundation work has begun.

What you’ll find in September

For visitors: The “buzzer” at the front door will be gone. Instead, visitors will enter the building through the new main office to the right where they will sign in.

For students: The main office will be on the “opposite” side of the hall. The school psychologist and social worker will move from across the gym to what is now the main office. The media center will be temporarily relocated to a room down the hall (before ultimately occupying a new space that is currently three rooms in the cafeteria hallway). The playground is gone while construction on the addition continues.

Central Valley Academy

CVA is undergoing major transformation. Work is progressing on the new district office, the new cafeteria, and work starts soon on the synthetic sports field.

District office

room gutted of partitions and ceiling tiles

The former Student Services offices in the basement have been gutted and will become the district offices.

Cafeteria

gutted room with exposed ceiling and concrete floor.

The former art rooms, life skills classrooms, technology classroom, and business office have been gutted. That portion of the building will be demolished to make room for the new cafeteria and shared learning space.

Synthetic sports field

Contractors will soon begin site work on the field.

What you’ll find in September

For visitors: No changes for now. The CVA entrance will be by the fitness center.

For students: The guidance office will be a hallway into the science wing. Students will not be able to walk directly to the small gym—that portion of the building will be gone. Art will be in the old shop room across from the small gym. Mrs. McCarthy’s life skills class and technology class will be in different rooms. Guidance, Student Services and the business office will be in the old junior high wing.
