Photo of David RyanHI! My name is Dave Ryan and I am a sixth grade teacher in the science department at Jarvis Middle School.

How long have you been teaching or working in the district?

Nine years

What do you like best about what you do?

I like that each day is different and brings about it’s own new challenges and opportunities.

What event here at Central Valley CSD has made/makes a difference to you personally and in your career?

It’s always interesting seeing former students as they often bring up things that they remember from when they were in my class. It serves as a reminder to try to always be at my best because as a teacher I constantly have the opportunity to make an impact.

Where are you involved outside of school and what do you like best about it?

I coach basketball. I grew up in a huge basketball family and my father was a high school coach, so I’ve been spending my winter evenings in a gymnasium since I was old enough to walk. I love everything about the sport.

What former jobs have you held?

My first jobs were at Personal Graphics, and Gold Rush Adventure Golf in Westmoreland. In college I worked at the Turning Stone golf courses during the summer.

Where were you educated?

Westmoreland Central School
SUNY Brockport – Bachelors
SUNY Cortland – Masters

Where have you lived?

I grew up in Rome and Westmoreland, and also lived in Greensboro, NC for a year as a kid. I lived in Brockport while in college, and moved to Mohawk a few years after I started teaching.

If you could do anything on a weekend, what would you do?

During the summer, I would be outside doing something active. I’ve gotten into hiking and climbing mountains in the last couple years. So far I have hiked 20 of the 46 “High Peaks” in the Adirondacks.

What book and/or author are you currently reading?

Toughness by Jay Bilas.

What is your favorite television show/movie/actor?

TV: Breaking Bad, Seinfeld
Movie: Hoop Dreams

If you could go anywhere in the world, where would you go and why?

I love to travel to different places, but I always especially enjoy going to Charlotte to visit some of my family that has relocated there over the last few years.
