Meet staff member Jake Lutke

Jake Lutke standing in officeHi! I am Jake Lutke. I teach physics, science and math at Central Valley Academy.

How long have you been teaching or working in the district?

I’ve been teaching for 14 years. I began my career at Dolgeville (3 yrs) and then transitioned to Mohawk (7 yrs). I have been at CVA for the last 4 years since the merge.

What do you like best about what you do?

I like to think that I make impressions on young people who are about to enter adulthood.  That students will glean some bit of advice about how to live a rewarding life, (and also learn something interesting about how the universe works – physics!)

What event here at Central Valley CSD has made/makes a difference to you personally and in your career?

Hmmm… I can’t narrow it down to an event, but I do feel that I work with an fantastic department and administration which makes a huge difference to me personally and in my career.  It makes it very easy to enjoy my profession as a teacher and to not dislike “going to work” each day.

Where are you involved outside of school and what do you like best about it?

Mostly my home raising a family, (I have 4 young children,) chauffeuring to sporting events, music lessons, dance lessons, etc.

I’m also very involved with my local church, where I am the Director of Worship. I lead the band on guitars and vocals.

What former jobs have you held?

Professionally; right out of college I had a job as an Applications Engineer for Indium Corporation in Utica. Prior to that (while in HS and College,) I had many part time jobs involving just about everything. To name a few;

Where were you educated?

I don’t really like this question because it makes it sound like I’ve only learned during specific times and places. I continue to learn via audio-books, workshops, TED talks, online courses from various institutions, et cetera, But to answer the question:

I attended Kingston High School in the Hudson Valley.
Went to The University at Albany for my undergraduate work where I doubled in Physics and Mathematics.
I studied Secondary Education for my Masters at Utica College.

Where have you lived?

I grew up in the suburbs of Kingston, NY, lived in Albany, NY for 4 years, and settled just outside Madison, NY (where my wife is from.)

If you could do anything on a weekend, what would you do?

I’m pretty much up for anything.

What book and/or author are you currently reading?

Just finished Mindset by Carol Dweck. I think every person in our district whether student, parent, school staff or administration would benefit greatly from this simple concept: Fixed mindset vs Growth mindset.

If we were to listen to your iPod or sound system, what would be playing?

I don’t listen to music much, mostly sports talk radio or audiobooks. But when I do listen to music it’s mostly modern worship.

What is your favorite television show/movie/actor?

Don’t have a specific favorite, but prefer some genres over others. I like watching live sports and sports series like 30 for 30. I enjoy Sci-Fi and comedy, and I’ve been watching a lot of “Family” movies and shows.

If you could go anywhere in the world, where would you go and why?

I’m an adventurer, I’d go anywhere! I sometimes bemoan not having enough time or money to see the world. If I had to pick one place though I think I’d really like to see Japan or Chile; the cities, the rural areas, the culture.

What one thing would you share that people might not know about you?

I am an introvert. I’m VERY uncomfortable in large groups or striking up conversation with people I don’t know.
I love sports – watching, playing, listening. My favorite teams: Syracuse Basketball, Soccer, and Lacrosse, NY Yankees, NY Football Giants, Utica Comets. Also, I think I came up with the name Central Valley.  Before the merge was official, I mentioned that name in passing to several different teachers and administrators as well as my students, (that it would be a great and fairly generic name for a merged district.)  It showed up on the ballot!
