Barringer kicks off 2016 PARP – The Magic of Reading

Magic captivates young Barringer Road students at the school’s PARP kickoff.

Barriger Road Elementary School kicked off its 2016 Pick A Reading Partner (PARP) campaign on Monday, Mar. 7. This year’s theme is “The Magic of Reading.”

Keeping with the theme the kickoff assembly featured magician Jim Okey. Amidst his many magic tricks, he reminded the students that reading can magically unlock new worlds. He encouraged them to check out the magic books librarian Cynthia Bechard has on the Barringer library shelves.

With the support of the PTO, PARP is a reminder that reading is important and can be fun. The program encourages students to find a partner with whom they can read for 15-20 minutes nightly. A parent or other adult must record and initial the number of minutes the child reads. Students who meet the requirement for each of the next 11 days will have their names entered into a drawing for great prizes. Closing festivities and the prize drawing will take place on Friday, Mar. 18.

The students can also visit the PTO book fair each day on the cafeteria stage. In addition to the fun of picking out their own books, the book fair is a major PTO fundraiser. All profits go to the PTO to help fund school field trips, assemblies, and classroom supplies not covered by the school’s regular budget.

The school sent home a one-page calendar that lists the day’s special events and includes a space for an adult to record and initial minutes a student reads each day.
