Barringer Road Elementary has teamed up with the Herkimer County Hunger Coalition to offer Operation Candy Cane. The program is an annual event held around Veteran’s Day where items are collected to support active duty soldiers and veterans. In the past, care packages have been sent overseas and students have created cards to brighten a soldier’s day.

This year items will be collected to support the Gregory J. Harris Courtesy Room at the Syracuse Hancock International Airport. This is one of only a few privately funded military lounges in the nation. It offers snacks, drinks and a comfortable place for our servicemen and women to rest while they await flights or transportation to their next destination.

Participating in Operation Candy Cane teaches students character traits that will be with them a lifetime. “It is with great honor to be able to teach our students at Barringer Road the true meaning of being respectful community members,” said Principal Jeremy Rich.

The collection will run though November 13th. Items can be sent to school with your child or dropped off at the main office. Students in each grade level are asked to donate the following items:

  • Kindergarten – paper napkins
  • 1st grade – packaged rice krispy treats
  • 2nd grade – bottles of water
  • 3rd grade – small boxes of raisins
  • 4th grade – travel size baby powder

All donations are greatly appreciated. If you have any questions, please contact the Barringer Road School office at 315-894-8420.
