The Central Valley Music Department recently celebrated Music In Our Schools Month (MIOSM) with a variety of grade 7-12 concerts at Central Valley Academy. Music In Our Schools month began in the 1970’s in New York State with NYSSMA and is now celebrated across the country during the month of March and sponsored by NAfME (National Association for Music Education). It is a month set aside to recognize the importance of music in student’s lives to create the whole child. At Central Valley, grade 7-12 concerts were held with culminating numbers combining the Jarvis and CVA ensemble with the music staff working together.
On March 16, 2016, the Music Department presented grades 7-12 Instrumental Music In Our Schools Month Concert. The Jarvis and CVA Orchestra under the direction of Kiersten Lestrange performed. The Jarvis orchestra performed Sahara Crossing by Richard Meyer and Hunter’s Chorus from Der Freischutz by Carl Maria von Weber, arranged by Meyer. The CVA Orchestra played Serenade and Dance by Mozart and Electric Sinfonia by Lauren Bernofsky. The students also performed an arrangement of Yellow by Coldplay arranged and conducted by CVA sophomore Caroline Gardner. The Jarvis and CVA Orchestra ended their portion of the concert with a combined number entitled Bass-ically Bluegrass by Bob Phillips.
The Jarvis Junior High Band under the direction of Amy Casale played selections from Scenes from an Ocean Voyage by Brian Balmages. The CVA Symphonic Band under the direction of Michael Fenton played Legacy by James Swearingen, Adagio for Winds by Elliot DelBorgo and Into the Raging River by Steven Reineke. The Jarvis and CVA Bands ended the concert with a combined number, Osmosis by Sean O’Loughlin conducted by Mr. Fenton.
On March 23, 2016, the Music Department presented a grade 7-12 Vocal Music In Our Schools Month Concert. The concert opened with CVA Chamber Choir under the direction of Mark Bunce. Chamber Choir performed The Star Spangled Banner, Zion’s Walls by Aaron Copland and Lean on Me with We Shall Overcome arranged by Mark Hayes. The boys section also performed the spiritual Hush! Somebody’s Calling My Name by Brazeal Dennard, while the girls section performed the spiritual I’m Going Home On a Cloud by Susan Taylor-Howell. The Jarvis Junior High Chorus under the direction of Colleen Ring-Campbell performed Keep Your Lamps by Victor Johnson and Oye La Musica (Hear the Music) by Jay Althouse. CVA Concert Choir under the direction of Mark Bunce performed a Cival War themed program. Selections included Song of Freedom a setting of Spirituals arranged by Victor Johnson, The Gettysburg Address Lincoln’s famous text set to music by Mark Hayes, The Ashokan Farewell by Jay Ungar and arranged for choir by Carole Stephens and the famous Peter Wilhousky setting of The Battle Hymn of the Republic. The concert ended with the combined Jarvis Junior High Chorus and CVA Concert Choir performing Carl Strommen’s Like an Eagle conducted by Mark Bunce with Ann Kocuba at the piano, Caroline Gardner on Electric Bass and Noah Geloso on drum set.
