To save lives by informing our school community and educating our students on the importance of sun safety, and empowering our students to protect themselves and to educate others.
- Educate all of our students, grades Pre-K through 12th, using age appropriate content.
- Provide sunscreen for all playgrounds and athletic fields.
- Include skin checks as a part of school/sport physicals performed at school.
- Make sun protection a regular part of every student’s daily routine (applying sunscreen when needed, checking their skin regularly, wearing hats & sunglasses and making better clothing choices to protect their skin).
More than 3.5 million skin cancers are diagnosed each year in the U.S. That is more than all other cancers combined. (American Cancer Society)
An estimated 75% of all skin cancers could be prevented by practicing sun protection in childhood and adolescence. (American Cancer Society)
One bad sunburn in childhood doubles the risk of skin cancer later in life (CDC) and sustaining five or more bad sunburns in youth increases lifetime melanoma (the deadliest form of skin cancer) risk by 80%.
