June was again time for the big throw down as students in Family and Consumer Science teacher Kathy Nasypany’s Baking classes took their best shots at the crown in the 2015 Cupcake Wars. This spring’s theme was “Summertime.”
Groups of up to five students created their cupcake masterpieces and then were rated by guest judges former Crave Bake Shop owners Michelle and Joe Herringshaw, teacher Kathleen Deck and senior rep Joe Marmet.
Each entry was judged on a scale of 1-4 for appearance, cake, icing and overall presentation. Period 1 winners were Ashley Faubert, Brittany Polly, Alexis Powell, David Bardo and Lauren Gravelding for their “Shark Attack,” a nutritious Cinnamon Apple Cake with Blue Buttercream frosting. In Period 7, Elyssa Hight, Nichole Wren, Alexis Dekanek, Rileigh Plunkett and Justin Reynolds took the top prize with their Strawberry Shortcake cupcakes layered with strawberry curd filling and topped with homemade whipped cream frosting.
“The competition gets better each time we do this. We had so many good entries, it was hard for the judges to pick. One group even tried their hand at a root beer float cupcake,” said Mrs. Nasypany.
