CVA readers and writers meet best-selling author Sarah Maas

Thirteen members of the Book Club and Writing Club, as well as a few Sarah Maas fans spent two hours listening, asking questions, and getting books signed by the author. Ms. Maas wrote the Throne of Glass series (soon to be a TV series on Hulu) and the Court of Thorns and Roses series of Young Adult fantasy fiction. A self-described “book nerd” in high school, she told the audience she originally wrote the Throne of Glass when she was just 16.

For aspiring writer Jade Shepardson (grade 10), Maas was an inspiration.

“She gave us an inside view into what it takes to be a writer and reminded us to never be discouraged by those who say you can’t ever be published,” she said.

Maas encouraged her audience to work hard getting their words to the page and not worry about the writing being perfect, saying “You cannot edit a blank page.”

Sophomore Tyler West was heartened by the fact that “there are many different ways to write and no particular way is right or wrong.”

CVA Media Specialist and club adviser Steve Inzer said the day was an extraordinary opportunity for his students.

“This special event was limited to just 50 people, so our students had the opportunity to hear from a true ‘rock star’ in the YA literature world, all in a small, intimate setting,” he said.
