Fisher projects honor the military

How do we teach our students to show respect for those who serve our country?

Harry M. Fisher Elementary School is honoring our U.S. servicemen and women through the school’s Operation Candy Cane Food Drive and Christmas Cards for Our Troops.

Operation Candy Cane collects donations for the Gregory Harris Military Courtesy Room at the Syracuse Airport. The courtesy room provides military personnel with snacks, beverages and a comfortable place to wait and rest for flights or transportation to local military installations. Many are travelling to or from Ft. Drum, home of the U.S. Army 10th Mountain Division.

Nov. 1-18, each grade is collecting specific items that will be pooled with other donations through the Herkimer County Hunger Coalition.

  • Pre-K is collecting small boxes of raisins.
  • Kindergarten is collecting lunch- and dinner-sized paper plates.
  • First grade is collecting cases of bottled water.

All donations are gathered on a table outside the school office.

Nov. 1 – Dec. 1, individual classrooms are encouraged to make Christmas cards that will be be distributed to soldiers in transit at the Courtesy Room and to patients at the Veterans Administration Hospital in Syracuse. Students and families can also make cards at home and drop them off in the box near the Operation Candy Cane table outside the school office.

Principal Michele Pilla and the staff and students encourage all families to take part.
