Fisher Elementary School rededicated a plaque honoring veterans at the school’s Memorial Day ceremony on Thursday, May 22. Special guests included Central Valley Assistant Superintendent Cindy Stocker, Town of German Flatts Supervisor Frank Spatto, Mohawk Village Clerk Judy Bray, American Legion Post 25 Commander Richard Monahan, United States Air Force veteran Jane Coonradt, Army veteran Larre Harris and Navy veteran Master Chief Sandy Mays-Brault.
The plaque was originally mounted on a stone monument adjacent to Fisher’s outdoor swimming pool. Rising maintenance costs and increased liability forced the district to close the pool several years ago. Last November, workers salvaged the plaque from its crumbling monument.
“We had planned to rededicate the plaque and to display it prominently on school grounds. Fisher Principal Dr. Marsha Mays-Smith and her staff took the initiative to include that rededication as part of the school’s 2014 Memorial Day celebration,” said Superintendent of Schools Cosimo Tangorra.
“It seems only fitting that we would take this important action in conjunction with this important holiday. We are also pleased that the rededication provides this generation of students with a more personal tie to the men and women who sacrificed so much for our freedom.”
