Hi, my name is Jessica Spatto. I am a second grade teaching assistant at Barringer Road Elementary
How long have you been teaching or working in the district?
I started working for the Ilion School District in September 2011. I started at Remington Elementary as an aide. I was an aide for 1 1/2 years. After that I became a Teacher’s Assistant in January 2013 before the merge of Mohawk and Ilion. After the merge, I have been Mrs. Obreaza’s assistant for the last 5 years.
What do you like best about what you do?
My favorite part of my job is being with the kids first thing in the morning. I am in charge of the breakfast cart in the second grade hallway and most of the students love to give hugs. I will never refuse a warm hug from any of the students. I still see many students out and about and they always remember the warm hugs.
Where are you involved outside of school and what do you like best about it?
I am involved in many things outside of school. My family and I are part a Model A car club and a Model T car club where I am the treasurer. We are members of The Friends of the German Flatts Town Park. We enjoy being outside and being together as a family.
What former jobs have you held?
Prior to coming to Ilion District, now Central Valley Central School District, I worked for 8 years for the YMCA in Little Fall. I was at Benton Hall Academy as an aide for the 6 to 6 Pre-K program.
Where were you educated?
I graduated from Mohawk High School. I am now back to college at HCCC.
Where have you lived?
I have live in Mohawk most of my life. Prior to that I lived in Thiells, NY, which is about 30 minutes outside of NYC. My parents moved to Mohawk to be near my great-grandmother and other family members that live here.
If you could do anything on a weekend, what would you do?
Spend time with my kids. We love to do crafts, paint, or just go for a walk in the woods.
If we were to listen to your iPod or sound system, what would be playing?
What is your favorite television show/movie/actor?
Food Network is my favorite Channel. My favorite shows are “Diners, Drive-ins and Dives,” “Chopped,” and any of the Bake-Off challenges.
If you could go anywhere in the world, where would you go and why?
I don’t really want to be a world traveler, although I would like to go to Italy to see where my ancestors came from and taste the food. Other than that, I love being in Maine.
What is something people might not know about you?
We also own a few classic cars so we enjoy going to car shows locally and around the state.
