Central Valley Academy proudly honors its Class of 2017 valedictorian Benjamin Girard and salutatorian Ian Markwardt.
Ben will graduate with an Advanced Regents Diploma with Honors with distinction in Math and Science. This year, he was selected for a yearlong job shadowing experience through which he learned more about the medical and environmental fields.
In addition to his studies, he has been active in a variety of community and extracurricular activities. He is president of Student Council and National Honor Society. In his junior year, faculty named him as a student who demonstrates leadership qualities and makes a positive contribution to the school and community. As a sophomore, faculty chose him to represent CVA at the Hugh O’Brien Youth Leadership Conference. He has also been a strong team player on the CVA varsity football and baseball teams.
This fall, Ben will attend Clarkson University where he will major in Environmental Engineering. He is the son of Peter and Diane Girard of Mohawk.
Ian has excelled in honors, college level and AP courses. He earned the Honor CVA Letter for being on Principal’s Honor Roll for the past three years. As a junior, he received the Bausch & Lomb Honorary Science Award given to an outstanding math and science student. He also was a full-year intern, spending more than 70 hours exploring optometry.
He is a member of the National Honor Society and Tri-Music Honor Society, and is the secretary of the Class of 2017. He has been a member of all-county band and all-county jazz band, and performed in school musicals. He has also been a strong contributor to the CVA varsity volleyball and cross country teams.
This fall, Ian will attend Utica College where he will major in biology. He is the son of Andrew and Holly Markwardt of Mohawk.
