Meet staff member Christine Ruff

Photo of Christine RuffHi! My name is Christine Ruff. I am a social studies teacher at Central Valley Academy. I have been teaching about 20 years.

What do you like best about what you do?

I truly enjoy instructing students on the enduring issues found in Global Studies. I find a great satisfaction in watching students debate political and economic issues which affect our view of the world today. my goal is to foster informed and involved world citizens.

What event here at Central Valley CSD has made/makes a difference to you personally and in your career?

The most significant event for me was the inception of the Advanced Placement World History course which was offered the first year after our school merger. This course has motivated me as an educator, and I hope my students to reach a higher level of understanding and knowledge of world history and geography.

Where are you involved outside of school and what do you like best about it?

I enjoy traveling and have visited many countries in Europe and Latin America. Closer to home, I love spending time with my family, especially my grandchildren. I am an excellent chef!

What former jobs have you held?

Before I became a teacher, I managed my husband’s pediatric dental practice.

Where were you educated?

I graduated with a Bachelor’s degree from Hamilton College with a concentration in Philosophy. Additionally, I have a Master’s degree from Syracuse University in Social Studies Education. I have continued to take graduate studies at the Citadel and the College of Charleston, South Carolina. finally, as a part of my certification and as a College Board instructor, I completed studies at Fordham University in New York City.

Where have you lived?

Although I was born in Denver, Colorado, I have lived most  of my life in central New York.

If you could do anything on a weekend, what would you do?

I enjoy gardening, playing golf, the piano, and most of all reading a good book.

What book and/or author are you currently reading?

Professionally I am currently reading a book written by my former high school classmate, Sam Wineburg, Think Like an Historian. I also enjoy reading historical fiction and suspense novels.

If we were to listen to your iPod or sound system, what would be playing?

I enjoy listening to a variety of music, from classical to jazz to R & B.

What is your favorite television show/movie/actor?

I watch the new York Yankees and many other professional sports teams.

If you could go anywhere in the world, where would you go and why?

I would like to visit Constantinople to experience the many cultures there.
