Meet staff member Courtney Allen

Photo of Courtney AllenHi! My name is Courtney Allen. I am a special education teacher and taught grades three and four at Barringer Road Elementary School this past year.

How long have you been teaching or working in the district?

Began in September 2016.

What do you like best about what you do?

Watching the students smile and become excited when they achieve their goals that they set for themselves. Seeing the students progress everyday.

Where are you involved outside of school and what do you like best about it?

I put all of my time and effort into my students and what activities we do each day. I put extra time at night to come up with activities that I know the students will enjoy and have fun learning.

What former jobs have you held?

I began as a Preschool Special Education Teacher for my first two years of teaching. Last year I was a 6th Grade Behavioral Adjustment Teacher at Herkimer BOCES.

Where were you educated?

I went to Keuka College for 4 years on a full academic scholarship. While working as a Preschool Special Education Teacher, I finished my Masters online through Western Governors University.

Where have you lived?

I was born in Utica, NY. My family moved to the Watertown area, where I ended up graduating from Sackets Harbor Central School. Last year was the year I began my adventure here in Ilion, NY.

If you could do anything on a weekend, what would you do?

I would enjoy being outside four-wheeling or snowmobiling. If I had time, I love playing sports especially basketball, soccer, and softball.

What is your favorite television show/movie/actor?

I enjoy watching Criminal Minds and NCIS. I like watching them solve problems, just like I try to solve issues that arise with my students.

What one thing would you share that people might not know about you?

I knew that I wanted to be a teacher since 2nd Grade. It was not until 9th Grade that I knew I wanted to be a Special Education Teacher. My Great- Grandmother (Amma) was nice enough to buy me a blackboard when I was in 2nd grade and that is how I began my teaching. I have loved teaching ever since. I continue to learn new ideas daily from my students and colleagues. I am overjoyed with happiness that I have been accepted into the Central Valley community and I appreciate all of the kind words and ideas that people have been kind enough to give me.
