Hi! My name is Gemma Siringo. I am a fourth grade teacher at Barringer Road and have been teaching for 15 years.
What do you like best about what you do?
The best thing about teaching is seeing the enthusiasm in the students each and every day. In addition, it is so gratifying to me when a more difficult concept is understood by the students.
What event here at Central Valley CSD has made/makes a difference to you personally and in your career?
The events at CVCSD that have made a difference to me personally are the “Show of Love” and fundraisers like “Team Diane” and “EyeLoveCecilia.” The “Show of Love” is a wonderful program to promote character education which also builds a culture of caring in the community. “Team Diane” and EyeLoveCecilia” also teach good citizenship and foster a sense of community which is so important to everyone, especially students at a young age.
What former jobs have you held?
- Commercial Lines Rater at the Hartford Insurance Company;
- Service Representative at Prudential Insurance Company;
- Allocations Assistant and Marketing/Communications Assistant at The United Way of Greater Utica.
Where were you educated?
I was educated at the New Hartford Central School District, Mohawk Valley Community College, SUNY Oneonta and SUNY Cortland.
Where have you lived?
I was born in Utica and raised in New Hartford.
If you could do anything on a weekend, what would you do?
On a weekend, you may find me listening to live music, dancing, doing nature photography, decorating, cross-country skiing, bicycling, or volunteering for the American Heart Association or the American Cancer Society.
What book and/or author are you currently reading?
The book I am currently reading is Revelation by Stephen King.
If we were to listen to your iPod or sound system, what would be playing?
My iPod would be playing funk/rhythm & blues/dance music by The Soulmine Band, Tower of Power, Prime Time Funk, and Bruno Mars.
What is your favorite television show/movie/actor?
I don’t watch much television, but when I do I like Bates Motel, movies of the 1940’s (black & white crime dramas), and classic comedies.
If you could go anywhere in the world, where would you go and why?
If I could go anywhere in the world, I would travel to Italy and visit the cities from where my grandparents emigrated and try to locate relatives whom I’ve never met.
What one thing would you share that people might not know about you?
People might not know that I have worked on theatrical shows at Players of Utica and the Capitol Theatre in Rome as production coordinator, props coordinator, stage manager, costumer, set construction/painting and makeup since I was 14 years old. I have also appeared in shows, my favorite being Scrooge performed at the Stanley Theatre. I also began a drama club for Barringer Road School for 4th, 5th, 6th graders in 2003 where the students performed The Wizard of Oz.
