Hi! My name is Jim Mott. I teach English and coach Boys Varsity Soccer at Central Valley Academy. I have been teaching for 25 years.

What do you like best about what you do?

I get to spend the day with young people full of energy. Getting the opportunity to give them some direction and meaning is priceless to me. Every single day provides me a new challenge.

What event here at Central Valley CSD has made/makes a difference to you personally and in your career?

No doubt the Mott Marathon Challenge. The whole thing started out as an innocent bet and now nine years later it has become a tradition and wonderful event that I am extremely proud of. We have raised money for great causes, we are encouraging healthy choices, we have brought great publicity to the school, and I have been able to watch students torture themselves in an event that leaves them with a sense of accomplishment they have never known before once they are finally done. We have 46 seniors signed up so far for this year’s marathon which is June 11.

Where are you involved outside of school and what do you like best about it?

I love the outdoors, trail running, and camping. I am an avid runner and I have run 52 marathons including Boston nine times. I am all about my two daughters-Jamie (12) and Bailee (10). They are my world. I coach AYSO soccer and Little League Baseball in Sauquoit. I coach for the Coliseum Soccer Club and officiate youth basketball. I have also coached Varsity Boys Soccer for 25 years now. Team sports truly provide great lessons for kids and adults.

What former jobs have you held?

I worked as the Sports Editor at the Herkimer Telegram in 1988. I have been a personal trainer at numerous fitness centers. I have also worked as an Assistant Principal in two school districts in the southern part of the state-Ellenville High School and LaGrange Middle School which is part of the Arlington School District in Poughkeepsie.

Where were you educated?

  • Utica College-undergraduate
