Meet staff member Nancie Cooney

Photo of Art Teacher Nancie CooneyHi! My name is Nancie Cooney. I teach art at Barringer Road Elementary and Jarvis Middle Schools. I have been teaching for 33 years.

What do you like best about what you do?

The best part of my job is to encourage students to realize the connection between the visual arts and other academic areas. I consider myself to be fortunate as I see students as they progress in their abilities to be creative, gain skills and scaffold on their prior years in creating art. I also enjoy working with my colleagues.

Where are you involved outside of school and what do you like best about it?

I teach at Herkimer College, Mohawk Valley Community College, and Mohawk Valley Center for the Arts. I enjoy participating in Odyssey of the Mind as a Head Judge for the Regional Competition. I am an active member of the New York State Art Teachers Association, Herkimer County Art Teachers Association and Delta Kappa Gamma Alpha Chi Chapter.

What former jobs have you held?

Residence Hall Director, Recreation Therapist and Herkimer Summer Recreation Director.

Where were you educated?

I attended college at SUC at Fredonia and State University College at Buffalo.

Where have you lived?

I have lived in many areas of New York State: Albany, Horseheads/Elmira, Poughkeepsie, Buffalo and Ilion.

If you could do anything on a weekend, what would you do?

I would most enjoy spending time with my family.

What book and/or author are you currently reading?

Every Leader is an Artist; How the World’s Greatest Artists Can Make You a More Creative Leader by Michael O’Malley and William Baker.

If we were to listen to your iPod or sound system, what would be playing?

James Taylor, Chicago, Spyro Gyra, any Jazz and Rock.

What is your favorite television show/movie/actor?

My favorite movie is The Sound of Music.

If you could go anywhere in the world, where would you go and why?

I have always wanted to visit the National Parks in the west.
