Meet Jarvis reading teacher Kate Bugeya

smiling woman, glasses, holding a book

Hi! My name is Kate Bugeya. I am a Jarvis ELA/Reading teacher.

How long have you been teaching in the district?

This is my first year at CVA, but this is my 12th year teaching.

What do you like best about what you do?

The best part about my job is working with kids. I also love working with all of the amazing educators at Central Valley School District.

What event here at Central Valley CSD has made/makes a difference to you personally and in your career?

I have to say that one of my favorite events to attend are our Football games. We have one of the most beautiful stadiums in the Valley but that is not the main reason I hold football so near and dear to my heart, my Grandfather was an Ilion football coach for many years, my father, brother and son all played football on our field. There is just something about being at the games that makes me proud to be a part of Central Valley School District.

Where are you involved outside of school and what do you like best about it?

My photography business keeps me pretty involved in the community…and I love it! I get the opportunity to meet new people and I get the chance to visit with old friends and meet their growing families. My favorite part about photography is that I get to be creative, I try to think of different angles and settings that I can use to photograph my clients. I photograph anything from newborns to families, seniors, weddings, sports events and I have even photographed a few proms.

What former jobs have you held?

I have always held jobs where I get to work with kids. I started babysitting at a young age, and as I grew older, I worked as a Summer Program, Park Director. I also worked as a waitress before I began teaching.

Where were you educated?

I graduated from Ilion High School before I earned my Associate’s Degree at MVCC. I completed my Bachelor’s Degree in English and Adolescent Education at Utica College and finally I finished my Master’s Degree in Literacy at SUNY Cortland.

Where have you lived?

I was born in Fayetteville, North Carolina, I also lived in: Monterey California, Ft. Campbell Kentucky, Ft. Leavenworth Kansas, Woodbridge Virginia, Wurtzburg Germany, and of course beautiful Upstate New York. I moved around quite a bit, when I was a child, because my father was active-duty in the Army. In fact, we moved eleven times before I turned 17.

If you could do anything on a weekend, what would you do?

I’m a pretty low-key kind of person. Mostly, I enjoy spending the weekends with my family and friends.

What book and/or author are you currently reading?

I am currently reading Percy Jackson and the Olympians: The Lightning Thief by Rick Riordan with my 6th graders and I’m really enjoying it!

If we were to listen to your iPod or sound system, what would be playing?

I listen to a wide variety of music so if you were to look at my iTunes, you would find anything from Sarah Mclachian to Eminem. Currently, I have been loving The Chainsmokers, Maroon 5, and Post Malone.

What is your favorite television show/movie/actor?

Hands-down, Leonardo DiCaprio is my favorite actor, he is so versatile. He has starred in roles from What’s Eating Gilbert Grape to Blood Diamond and Catch Me if You Can, among other dramas and horror films, he can pretty much play any role and nail it.

If you could go anywhere in the world, where would you go and why?

I recently visited my son, Alex, in Germany and I would love to go back there again during the Christmas season. I moved to Germany when I was ten-years-old and lived there for three and a half years. I learned to speak German and I fell in love with the culture and the food. The Christmas season in Germany is my absolute favorite time of year.

What one thing would you share that people might not know about you?

My grandfather was Monk Manion, he was a teacher at Ilion and a football coach. He is one of the people who inspired me to become an educator.
