Students vote on a district name
On Wednesday, Apr. 24, students in grades 4-11 will vote on a new name for the merged school district. They will choose from a list of three submitted by the student-led School Identity Transition Advisory Team.
The three choices are (alphabetically listed):
- Central Valley Academy
- Ilion-Mohawk Central School
- Mohawk Valley Academy
Following the vote, the Board of Education will submit the name to the New York State Education Department for final approval. The transition team met twice over the past several weeks to narrow down ideas for a school name, a school mascot and school colors.
Superintendent Cosimo Tangorra said although people often express greater interest in the mascot and colors, the district needs its new name as quickly as possible. That name will be used for official documents, website address and school emails.
The transition team will meet again Monday, Apr. 29 to continue its discussion of mascot and colors. The team has been teleconferencing via Skype with former Mohawk resident Hal Hefner who is a graphic designer and artist in Los Angeles. He has shared his talent and professional experiences with the group.
Once the School Identity team finalizes its list of mascot and color choices, students will again vote.
