Body Mass Index (BMI) Screening

As part of the required school health exam for students in grades 2, 4, 7 and 10, each child’s height and weight is measured. These numbers are used to calculate a student’s body mass index (BMI). The district must submit a general summary of this information to the NYS Department of Health on an annual basis. No information about individual students will be included. However, if you do not want your child’s weight status information to be included as part of the general summary, you may opt-out by notifying your child’s school nurse in writing.

New York state requires schools to track each student’s body mass index (BMI) and weight status category as part of school health examinations. Every year, the New York State Department of Health surveys some schools for the number of students in each of six possible weight status categories. If Central Valley School District is surveyed by the state, the district will share summary group data only and will not share individual names or information. Parents/guardians who wish to exclude their child’s data from the summary group calculations must contact their school nurse.

Note: The New York State Center for School Health suggests informing parents that if they are exercising their right to withhold their child’s information, they should indicate this by Jan. 2, 2019, as the survey will be due for submission from participating schools by Jan. 30, 2019.
