Pumpkins equal science, math, art and fun

photo of teacher helping a prek student count pumpkin seedsSo what can a pumpkin teach a prekindergartner? If you’re in Kim Vitale’s prek class at Barringer Road, you can learn lots!

First, you learn that a pumpkin is really a big fruit with its seeds inside (science). Then you separate the seeds from the pulpy “guts” (more science) and count out seeds into piles (math). Then you learn to carve the pumpkins into jack-o-lanterns (art and fun)!

A seemingly simple lesson such as this introduces young minds to the wonders of the world and shows them that all learning is connected.photo of two prek students counting pumpkin seeds photo of prek student counting pumpkin seeds
