Seniors take a day to walk in village officials’ shoes

Photo of 2015 Youth and Government Day - student dressed in firefighter gearOn May 20, 27 Central Valley Academy seniors walked in the shoes of village officials during the Youth in Government Day sponsored by Ilion Elks Lodge #1444. The intent of the program is to give students the opportunity to see how local government works and meet some of the elected officials.

Photo of 2015 Youth and Government Day - Mock village board meetingThe day started off with New York State Assembly Member Claudia Tenney encouraging the students to gain knowledge of their village operations. She also discussed the importance of registering to vote once eligible. Students had the opportunity to job shadow a Village of Ilion or Mohawk employee giving them insight on different village positions and the role they play to the community.

The morning ended with students participating in a mock village board meeting representing the mayor and village trustees. To wrap up the day students were given a tour of the Ilion Water Treatment Facility and the Mohawk Fire Department.
