Local Students Honored in “Honoring Our Four-Legged Soldiers” Essay Contest
Three CVA students were recently recognized for their outstanding writing and thoughtful reflections in the “Honoring Our Four-Legged Soldiers” Essay Contest, a regional competition designed to highlight the themes of service, sacrifice, and civic responsibility.
This year’s contest invited high school juniors and seniors to respond to the story of Bruno, a United States Marine Corps military working dog who served courageously during Operation Iraqi Freedom. Through their essays, students explored the meaning of service and proposed ideas for future additions to a growing memorial space in Herkimer.
Zachary Johnson and Brinlee DesJardins were named award winners, each receiving $250 for their compelling and insightful essays. Both students demonstrated a strong understanding of the contest’s themes while showcasing creativity and personal reflection.
Elana Glova was selected as the Grand Prize winner and will receive a $1,000 scholarship to support her continued education. Elana plans to attend Herkimer County Community College in the fall, where the scholarship will be applied toward her college expenses. Her essay stood out for its depth, originality, and powerful message honoring those who serve.
Contest organizers, Herkimer County Legislator John Brezinski and Superintendent Jeremy Rich, extend their sincere appreciation to all students who participated. The quality of submissions reflected the thoughtfulness, talent, and character of students across the region, making the selection process highly competitive.
This initiative not only celebrates student achievement, but also reinforces the importance of recognizing the contributions of service members, first responders, and service animals who dedicate their lives to protecting others.
Congratulations to all participants, and especially to this year’s award winners for their outstanding accomplishments.
