This morning, Molly Ciallelo's first grade used Artificial Intelligence (AI) to creatively learn about nouns (naming words), verbs (action words), adverbs (how things are done), and adjectives (describe the naming word).

Checking out the results from Magic Media's image creator.

With help from Mrs. Ciallelo, teaching assistant Mandy Knowles, and district Educational Technology Coach Liza Gonzalez, the students typed descriptor words into the Magic Media app on their Chromebooks. Magic Media's AI generates a photo representing the student's description. The lesson encouraged students to use different types of words to describe something  that they could imagine, then watch as those words became something they could see.

"This is a real world example of artificial intelligence at work in the classroom," said Mrs. Gonzalez.

"We recognize that AI is a powerful tool when used to enhance real learning. We are trying to expose students to it and teach them to harness its power responsibly."

What is Artificial Intelligence (AI)?

Computers can process huge amounts of data—much faster than the human brain.  When programmed to recognize patterns, computers store that information. They can then use that information to look for other patterns. In this way, computers "learn" more and more complex ideas. They can recognize speech (just ask Siri or Google) and can identify objects and faces. Google Genesis and Chat GPT are examples of AI platforms that "create" original texts and images.

Magic Media is an image generator. It takes "clues" from the user to look for stored images in its  memory that it might use or refine. The result may be spot on or surprising.

As an example, we typed frog (noun), green (adjective), jump (verb), high (adverb) and watched as Magic Media generated the images below. They were what we anticipated, but it was fun. We'll know to be a little more careful with our describing words in the future.

We never expected a repeating pattern (like wallpaper) of frogs performing ballet!
