Jarvis Middle School Principal Charlie Pratt sent this letter to families regarding upcoming state testing:

April 19, 2021

Dear Parents and Guardians,

NYS is mandating schools give Part 1 of the ELA and Math 3-8 tests and the written portion of the Grade 8 Science exam this year. Because it is recognized that COVID-19 has significantly changed our learning, several updates to the structure of testing have been made:

  • Students will only be required to take Part 1 of the ELA and Math exams which consists of multiple choice questions.
  • Students learning virtually on the examination day(s) will not take the exam.
  • If a student is not in-person for the testing window it will not reflect negatively on the student nor the school. Students will still be able to participate in classes virtually.
  • You do not need to submit a "test refusal" letter to explain why your child is virtual during the testing window. Although there are still no "opt outs" recognized by the State, if a child is learning virtually on testing days, they are not required to sit for the exam. They can refer to Google Classroom for any teacher assignments.

Jarvis will test as follows:

  1. ELA Grades 7 and 8 Blue Cohort - Tuesday, April 27, 2021
  2. ELA Grade 5, Grade 6, Grades 7 and 8 Yellow Cohort - Thursday, April 29, 2021
  3. Math Grades 7 and 8 Blue Cohort - Tuesday, May 11, 2021
  4. Math Grade 5, Grade 6, Grades 7 and 8 Yellow Cohort - Friday, May 14, 2021
  5. Science Grade 8 - Monday, June 7, 2021

These testing sessions should run no later than 3rd Period; following which regular classes for the day will resume. If your child is virtual on one of their testing days, please make sure they sign in for 4th Period class at 9:39 a.m. (5th graders will sign into 5th period class following their lunch at 10:17 a.m.).

We realize this year has been very confusing and overwhelming at times. Please call us with any questions or concerns and we will help you.

Sincerely,

Charles W. Pratt
