Each September, Jarvis Middle School's Open House offers families a chance to connect with the greater school community. This year's event was no exception.

"Open house is one way we invite parents to become a more active part of their children's education," said Jarvis Assistant Principal Luke Manolescu.

"We do all of the expected things for a successful start to the school year. Teachers, staff, and administrators greet families as they arrive, directing them to classrooms and other meeting spaces. Students and parents get a chance to meet with their teachers to discuss their classes. Our administrators share expectations for the school year."

Equally important, families can learn about various community agencies that offer help with everything from financial and housing assistance to medical and mental health counseling and needs.

"Schools have evolved into much more than places where students learn to read and write," said Mr. Manolescu.

"We have become the hub that connects students and families with those who provide critical services. We have learned that when struggling families get a little help, they are in a better place to support their children's education."

Not every family is able to attend, but Open House is important for those who do. When parents connect with teachers and school leaders, they know where to turn when questions arise later in the year. Just learning about the local agencies offers peace of mind should families need that help now or in the future. The evening is a big step toward building a strong foundation for student success.

"We thank all who attend, and a special thank-you to all the local agencies who spend their evening with our school family," said Mr. Manolescu.

"Together we become a stronger community, both in school and out."
