All Jarvis fifth graders are part of a book club reading "Restart" by Gordon Korman. Each student received a copy of the book to keep at an opening assembly.

The author introduces the book on his website:

Chase Ambrose doesn’t remember falling off the roof. He doesn’t remember hitting his head. In fact, he doesn’t remember anything. He wakes up in a hospital room and suddenly has to learn his whole life over again … starting with his own name.

Okay, he’s Chase. But who is Chase? Soon he’s hearing stories of the alpha jock and bully who held a reign of terror over an entire school. Is that the person he was … and is destined to be again?

Is it possible to restart?

The goal of the book club  is two-fold.

First, the club  stresses the importance of reading. Sstudents have access to a Google Classroom that houses instructional materials, audio recordings of each chapter, and weekly announcements from Mrs. Wares. As students turn in completed work, they earn prizes for their hard work.

Second, the book teaches life lessons about respect for others, honesty, loyalty, and that it is possible to reimagine our image and behavior.

"This is a great book that ties in with our effort to teach Social and Emotional Learning," said Assistant Principal Luke Manolescu.

"We all need a reminder that doing the right thing is next easy, nor is it ever too late to start over."
